About Brandi Maxiell

Born and raised in the heart of Dallas, Texas, I've always carried the spirit of the Lone Star State with me on my culinary journey. My roots in Texas run deep, and it was here that my life was shaped by the strong, remarkable people who surrounded me.

My Granny, a humble and godly woman, instilled in me not only the art of cooking but also the values of humility and faith. Her kitchen was my first classroom, where I learned that food is a language of love and a bridge between generations.

My mother, a pillar of strength and support, played a pivotal role in my upbringing. Her nurturing guidance and unwavering love provided a solid foundation for my journey.

High school brought an unexpected twist to my story when I met my now-husband, from the vibrant city of chicago. Our journey was one of highs and lows, dating off and on through high school and college. I attended the University of North Texas and he attended University of Cincinnati.

It was during my time in college that I discovered my true passion—cooking. The kitchen became my sanctuary, a place where I could express my creativity and connect with my heritage.

Life took another turn when my husband was drafted into the NBA while I was still in college. We got engaged at the end of our college journey and embarked on a new adventure together in Detroit, where he played for the Pistons.

But life can be unpredictable, and we faced a formidable challenge when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It was a difficult chapter in our lives, but with strength, determination, and unwavering support, I emerged victorious. This experience deepened our bond and taught us the precious value of every moment.

After overcoming cancer, we celebrated our love by tying the knot. Then, on a magical date—11/11/11—we welcomed our miracle baby boy, Jason Maxiell II,  into the world. Through the highs and lows, joys and challenges, cooking has remained my constant companion, a source of comfort, creativity, and connection. In this cookbook, I share with you not only recipes but also the rich tapestry of my life, hoping that the flavors and stories within these pages will become a part of your own journey.
